Sunflower Seed

Helianthus is an evergreen herb that has a hairy stem and grows to 3 to 15 feet high. The Sunflower Seed leaves are broad and coarsely toothed with rough leaves that measure 3 to 12 inches in length. The attractive flower heads can be 7.5 to 15cm in diameter. The yellow petal-like ray flowers are yellow and the purple disk flowers are either brown, yellow or purple. This common sunflower is both valuable economically as well as ornamentally. Hybrid sunflowers are resistant to disease. Sunflower seeds are high in vitamin E, which is essential for the treatment of many chronic diseases.

Organic Sunflower Seed Benefits/Uses

Sunflower seeds can be used in many ways, including as garnishes and ingredients in a variety recipes. They can also be sprouted and added as an ingredient to salads.
Sunflower seeds can also extract oil that can be used for cooking.
It is also used in soaps, paints, and as a lubricant.

Sunflower Care and Planting

Sowing Sunflower seeds

For good contact between the seeds and soil, make a hole in the medium (such as grow bags) at about 1 inch to twice the length of your sunflower seed. Cover it with soil and pat it down to ensure that it is covered.
After 7 to 14 days, the seeds will start to sprout from the ground.
Sunflower seeds sprout quickly, increasing their plant compounds. Factors that could block mineral absorption are also reduced.

Growing Sunflower

Sunflower roots can withstand drought and have a large range of properties. It is recommended to water the sunflower plants regularly during their most critical growth period, which is approximately 20 days before and following flowering.
Avoid overcrowding by leaving a minimum of 1 to 2 feet between each plant. A 2- to 3-inch layer of organic material can be applied on top of the soil to reduce evaporation and discourage weeds.
After germination, flower heads will begin to appear around 33 days later. After 27 days, the anthers (pollen-bearing parts of the plants) will grow for eight days.
After this stage, the sunflower plant will reach full maturity in 30 days.
To support the plant’s height and overall growth, fertilize sunflowers with nitrogen. The recommended nutrient mixture for the plant should be between 10-15 and 10

Harvesting Of Sunflower

Once the seeds have grown and become plump, the petals of the flowers begin to dry and fall off. The back of the flower will change from green to red, which is the time it’s time to harvest. Harvesting is possible after 70 days.
Wrap each sunflower head with cheesecloth or a paper bag after the flower petals have fallen.
You can remove the seeds by loosening them with your hands. Cut the stalk approximately 4 inches below the head to harvest. A single head of sunflower can contain up to 2,000 seeds.

Common Problems with Sunflower Plants and Their Solutions

You must water your plants on a regular basis. However, overwatering or prolonged periods in wet weather can cause botrytis which can lead to the death of flowers.

The most common diseases that can affect sunflower plants are downy mildew and rust. These diseases can be reduced by cultural practices, seed treatment, and fungicides.

If fungal diseases are discovered early, it is important to spray a general garden fertilizer like Pseudomonas fluorescens Bio Fertilizer or TrichodermaViride Eco Fertilizers. If plants are seriously contaminated, they should be destroyed.

Avoid overfertilization. The leaves can burn if the fertilizer is too high.
