Description/Taste Lollo Rosso lettuce is small to medium in size and has a tight, compact, rosette-shaped growth. The fan-shaped, frilly, curled leaves are light green at the center. They turn to deep red-maroon at the edges. The leaves are connected at the base but do not form a head. Instead, they are composed of single branches. Lollo Rosso is tender, crisp, chewy, with a sweet, slightly bitter and nutty taste.

Seasons/Availability: Lollo Rosso lettuce is available year-round.

Current Facts: Lollo Rosso is botanically known as Lactuca Sativa. It is an Italian red loose-leaf, annual variety of Lollo Rosso that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Lollo Rosso lettuce, also known as Lollo Rossa or Lolla Rosso and Continental Red is a cut and come-again variety. This means that the outer leaves can still be harvested, and the plant will grow more leaves all season. This variety is popular for growing in home gardens because of its extreme resistance to heat. Lollo Rosso lettuce is a favorite for its texture and color. It’s also known for its curly edges.

Nutritional value: Lollo Rosso lettuce is rich in vitamins A and C, folate and fiber as well as antioxidants and iron.

Application: Lollo Roso lettuce is best for raw applications because of its bright color and curly texture. Its mild flavor is also evident when fresh. Curly leaves can be added to salads along with other greens. They have a higher surface area and are more likely to hold and retain salad dressing. You can use the leaves as a garnish or to layer on top of sandwiches, spread over soups, or as a base for meat. Lollo Rosso leaves go well with carrots, cherry tomatoes and watercress. When stored in the refrigerator’s crisper drawer, the leaves can be kept for up to four days.

Information about ethnicity and culture: Lollo Rosso lettuce is believed to have been first grown by the Egyptians. It was also considered an aphrodisiac as well as a healing remedy. To reduce stomach pains, the sap and leaves would be combined with beef, juniper berries and frankincense. Lollo Rosso is a very popular specialty lettuce. It was awarded the RHS Garden Of Merit award in 1993. This award recognizes its taste, texture and ease of growing.

Geography/History. Lollo Rosso is thought to have originated from the wild Lactuca seriola species that is native to Europe and North Africa. Although the exact source of the Lollo Rosso is unknown, it is believed that the variety was originally grown in Italy. It was also first cultivated by Ancient Egyptians.
