Description/Taste
The Banarasi Langra or ‘Langra Mango’ is a mango cultivar that is mostly grown in Varanasi, Northern India. In parts of northern India and Bihar the ‘Langra” fruit is also called ‘Malda Mango’, which refers to Malda in West Bengal.
Seasons/Availability
Dasheri mangoes can be found in the summer.
Climate and Soil Requirements
- Mango can thrive in any soil, as long as it’s well-drained and deep.
- Red loamy soils are ideal for cultivation.
- Mango crop production is not possible in alkaline soils, poorly drained and rocky substratum.
- Mango can be grown on alluvial and lateritic soils in India.
- Better results are possible with well-drained, rich, medium and heavy soils.
- It can be grown in subtropical and tropical climates.
- It is able to tolerate many environmental conditions.
Propagation Technique
Mangoes are either seed- or vegetatively propagated. There have been a variety of vegetative propagation methods that have been tried with different degrees of success. Seed propagation in India is simple and cheap, but it is not possible to preserve the characteristics and traits of Indian commercial cultivars. It takes longer for plants to bear fruit. Seedlings should be grown for future use.
Spacing
Mango trees can be planted anywhere from 7 to 10 metres. Under high-density plantation, it can grow to a height of 5 x 5 meters and 6×6 m. Amrapali, a North Indian cultivar, is suitable for dense planting.
Fertilizer Application
From the first year to the tenth, 170gm urea and 110gm single superphosphate and 115gm muriate potash per plant can be applied per year. Then, 1.7kg, 1.1kg and 1.15kg of these fertilizers can each be applied in two equal doses (June-July or October). A foliar spray with 3% urea should be applied to sandy areas before flowers.
Pest Management
Pest: Fruit Fly
Spraying Fenthion 2ml/lit and Malathion2ml/lit can control the pest. If the interspaces are not cleared, the pupae can be seen. A pheromone trap containing 1 ml methyl eugenol and 1 liter water + 1 mg of malathion will attract female insects to it. This trap will kill them.
Mango Malformations Management
- Use disease-free planting materials
- Infected plants should be removed.
- The incidence was reduced by spraying 100-200ppm NAA in October.
- Pruning unhealthy areas with healthy basal 15-20 cm portions
- Then, Carbendazim (0.1%) is sprayed.
Harvesting and Yield
Mangoes typically mature in 90 to 120 days from fruit set. To pick the fruit, pole harvesters are used.
Mango grafts are able to bear fruit in about 2 years. However, commercial yields can be achieved in as little 8-10 years. They can also last for up to 40-60 year. The average Langra Mango yield is 8 tons per hectare.
