Description

Dasheri Mango Plant

Dasheri Mango Plant range in size from small to medium. They are 9 to 15 cm long and have an oval shape. The ends are bluntly curved. The skin is semi-thick and smooth. It is leathery, subtly waxy, and slightly thicker than the rest. The orange flesh underneath is soft, tender, and almost completely fibreless. It also contains a small-sized stone. Dasheri mangoes have a tropical, nect-like aroma. The flesh of the fruit is extremely sweet with mildly tangy and tropical nuances.

Seasons/Availability

Dasheri mangoes can be found in the summer.

Current Facts

Dasheri mangoes are Indian varieties of the Anacardiaceae family. These sweet fruits, which were first discovered in 18th century India, are among the most revered and oldest varieties of Northern India. Dasheri mangos are prized for their sweet flavor, juicy flesh, and smooth texture. They are used in both raw and cooked dishes. There are many regional names for Dasheri mangoes such as Dusari (Dashhiri), Dusehri (Dusehri), and Dussehri. Dasheri mangoes are well-known in India for their ability to breed new varieties. This aromatic cultivar, which is the parent fruit of many Northern Indian mango varieties, including amrapali and mallika, was chosen for its high quality growth characteristics.

Nutritional Value

Like other mango varieties, dasheri mangoes are a good source of vitamin A to support the immune system. They also contain fiber to regulate the digestion. They are also rich in vitamin A, which is necessary for healthy organ function, folate, which aids in the production of red blood cells, as well as other nutrients such vitamin E, vitamin E, and calcium. Neben vitamins and minerals, Dasheri mangoes also contain phytochemicals that can be used to reduce inflammation.

Applications

Dasheri mangoes are sweet in flavor and considered “table” mangoes. They are usually eaten fresh, unopened. You can eat the fruits as a snack or healthy dessert. The flesh can be sliced and eaten raw, or blended with juices, smoothies and shakes. You can sprinkle the fruits with chili powder or salt, make salsas from them, or roll them in your hands. To release the juice, squeeze the pulp out of the fruit and then poke a hole in it. Dasheri mangoes are also great for making desserts like ice cream, sorbet and cake. They can also be cooked in curry and served with steamed rice. Mangoes are often boiled in India and then pureed and boiled with sugar and spices to make kachcha-aam papad. The mixture is then dried in the sun and rolled into small squares for a snack. You can also make appekayi Saru from mangoes. This is a Bengali summer drink that includes coconut, spices and peppers. Dasheri mangoes go well with meats like beef, poultry, pork, fish, coconut milk and aromatics such as garlic, ginger and shallots. Unwashed Dasheri mangoes can be ripened if they are kept at room temperature. The fruits can be kept in the refrigerator up to a week after they are ripe. When stored in a sealed container in your refrigerator, sliced mangoes can last several days.

Ethnic/Cultural Info

Malihabad, India’s mango capital, is home to some the oldest mango trees. The government of India gave Malihabad a Geographical Indications (or GI) status, declaring it the home of the Dasheri mango. The Dasheri Village is home to the mother Dasheri tree, which is between 200 and 300 years old. Legend has it that the abandoned mangoes were left in the village because of a tax dispute among mango growers. The fruits were left to rot and eventually decomposed, resulting in the birth of the mother Dasheri man tree. The Nawab of Lucknow eventually purchased the mother tree for his personal consumption. He was awed by its delicious flavor and texture. The Nawab loved mangoes so much, he hired guards to keep the tree safe every day. To prevent birds from eating the mangoes, he also had holes dug into the seeds. Although it is not known how the variety got away from this protection, there are plenty of stories and theories that Malihabad residents enjoy sharing. Modern-day, the mother Dasheri mango tree is closely guarded. Each season, the fruits are sent to the Nawab’s descendants.

Geography/History

Dasheri mangoes can be found in a village in Lucknow near Malihabad, in the state Uttar Pradesh. They are located just south of the Nepal border in Northern India. They were first discovered as a chance seedling in the 18th century. As a prized variety, they were closely protected and guarded. The Dasheri mangoes were eventually cultivated and can be found in Northern India and Southern India, in Andhra Pradesh. Mangoes can also be grown in Pakistan and Nepal. They are also exported to Southeast Asia including Hong King, Malaysia and the Philippines.
