Adenium

Adenium is a tropical flower that is well-known for its unique caudex (trunk) and striking flowers. No matter if you’re a novice grower or an experienced one, your Adenium will still be viable in all conditions. The desert rose, also known as Adenium, is a slow-growing succulent plant that can live for many years. Adeniums are attractive because of their beautiful flowers and the unique bottle-shaped trunk that makes them ideal for gardening.

Adeniums can be grown easily and thrive in tropical climates like India, Thailand, and the Philippines. Adenium is a tough and hardy plant that requires very little care. The only way to kill it is to overwater or leave it exposed to low temperatures. Adenium thrives in humid, cool climates if you take a few precautions.

Common Names

Adenium Obesum (Desert Rose), Adenium obesum” Also known as “Sabi Star”, Kudu, Mock Azalea and Impala Lily.

Uses and cultivation:

In temperate areas, Adenium obesum can be grown as a houseplant. Many hybrids have been created. Adeniums are loved for their beautiful flowers and their thick, unusual caudices. They can be kept in a pot for many years and are often used for bonsai.

Seed-grown plants may not be genetically identical to their mother plant. Therefore, grafting is often used to propagate desirable varieties. You can also propagate genetically identical plants by cutting. Cutting-grown plants tend not to grow a thicker caudex as fast as those grown from seeds.

Light:

Adenium needs direct sunlight and fresh air. Plants grown in shade will not flower well, become leggy and be more susceptible to disease. Sunscald can occur if the exposed parts (caudex), are not protected from the direct sunlight.

Temperature:

High temperatures are a common response for Adeniums. Adeniums thrive at temperatures between 30-35 degrees Celsius and moderate to high humidity. Temperatures consistently above 38 degrees Celsius seem to suppress growth and flowering. All taxa can be inducible to dormancy when night temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius if they are completely dry and dormant. However, root-rot is more likely below that temperature. The plant will suffer from branch damage at 10° Celsius, but the tips will still survive. Longer exposure to temperatures below 10° Celsius can cause serious damage or even death.

Water:

Your Adenium’s health is dependent on how well you water it. The frequency of watering will depend on the container used, soil mixture used and temperature. When plants are actively growing, and when it is hot in summer, Adenium requires more water. Monsoon and winter are more dry seasons. The soil retains water for longer periods of time due to slower absorption by the plants.

Soil:

Desert roses require excellent drainage in all soil mixes. If it isn’t provided, roots can rot and cause poor growth or death. A soil mix must also have adequate nutrients and moisture retention. Mix equal parts coarse sand and coco peat with half worm compost or well-rotted cowdung to create a soil mix that retains moisture while draining well.

Container:

You can grow desert roses in any container that allows for good drainage. Ceramic pots that are unglazed are best because they allow the soil time to dry between waterings. A clay pot must be large enough to allow expansion of the caudex. Otherwise, the pot may crack. You can choose to use ceramic or plastic, but clay pots will dry much faster than plastic.

Fertilizer:

If given adequate fertilizer, young plants will grow quickly for the first 2-3 years. As they age, their growth slows down. Every 2 weeks, give your young plants a full-strength liquid fertilizer. You can reduce or eliminate liquid fertilizer for mature plants. However, slow release fertilizer should be used.

Repotting:

Every year, root prune and repot the plant using a well-draining soil mixture such as the one described above. The plant can be root-bound, which is when the pot is too tight.

Pruning:

Most pruning is used to reduce the overall size of the plant or to remove specific branches to create a better plant.

Diseases and Pests:

Desert Rose is susceptible to aphids and mealybugs as well as spider mites, caterpillars and scale insects. It’s easy to control bugs if you regularly inspect your Desert Rose. Sometimes the small worms can eat the leaves. If the problem isn’t serious, you can just take the worm off the plant.

Adenium Plant Care

Initial (1 -2 weeks ) care once the plant reaches your place:

  • Check the moisture in the soil before watering it.
  • Poke your finger into the soil, if dry then apply water.
  • Require natural direct light.
  • Do not re-pot for min. 2 weeks after receiving it.
Sunlight Full sun.
Watering Moderately.
Soil Well draining and nutrient-rich soil
Temperature 18 to 35 degrees Celcius.
Fertilizer Use any organic fertilizer.
